Power BI training
Every month the same figures go into the same spreadsheet report, and every follow-up question means building it again. Power BI turns your data into an interactive report that answers those questions with a click. Two hands-on days take Excel users who are new to Power BI from a first look at Power BI Desktop to reports they can share, calculate and trust. Delivered live online to teams anywhere in the UK, or face to face at your offices.

What your team will be able to do
- Load an Excel table into Power BI Desktop and check it is structured correctly for analysis.
- Build tables, a matrix and cards, and add visual calculations such as profit ratio, share of total and a running total.
- Filter a report with slicers and the Filters pane, and choose the right graph for the question being asked.
- Build an interactive sales report and publish it to the Power BI Service.
- Share work through dashboards, workspaces and apps, with alerts and email subscriptions.
- Create calculated columns and measures with simple DAX, relate a lookup table, and clean a messy export before it is loaded.
The two days at a glance
Six sessions a day, each with hands-on exercises. On Day 1, every exercise answers a question a sales manager would ask.
Day 1 - build and publish a report
- Getting started. What Power BI is, a tour of Power BI Desktop, and loading the data.
- Creating tables. Number formats, sorting, styling, cross filtering and methods of aggregation.
- Cards, matrix and visual calculations. Key figures, drill down and percentages of total.
- Filters and slicers. Text, number and date slicers, and visual, page and report filters including Top N.
- Column, line and pie graphs. Picking the graph to fit the question, then formatting it.
- Interactive report and publishing. Build the sales report and share it in the Power BI Service.

Day 2 - share it, calculate and clean
- The Power BI Service. The published report, its options, and a report built in the browser.
- Dashboards. Pinning tiles, alerts, email subscriptions and the mobile layout.
- Workspaces, apps and Excel. Sharing with a team, Analyze in Excel and export to PowerPoint.
- Calculated columns. Sales, profit, year, month and weekday columns with simple DAX.
- Measures and relationships. First measures with SUM, DIVIDE and CALCULATE, and a lookup table in Model view.
- Query Editor and Copilot. Cleaning a messy export before it is loaded, and a first look at Copilot in Power BI.
What your team needs in place
- Power BI Desktop installed on a Windows PC - it does not run on a Mac
- A Power BI Pro licence to publish and share. Every delegate needs one on Day 2, which starts in the Power BI Service
- We check your Power BI admin settings with you before the course, so publishing and sharing work on the day
- For live online days: a stable internet connection. A second screen helps but is not needed
- Comfortable with Excel. No previous Power BI experience
The course uses prepared sales data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples show what becomes possible with your own data, and the team starts building with their own files after the course.
Price
One price for the whole team. All prices exclude VAT.
Live online
Live, instructor-led, on Teams or Zoom. The same hands-on days, without the travel.
Face to face at your offices
Ian comes to you and runs the course in your training room.
- Both days together save £195 live online or £295 face to face.
- Up to two extra delegates at £95 each per day.
- Half days can be arranged and are priced when we quote.
Where Power BI fits
When a report needs to reach more people than one workbook can, Power BI takes the same skills further. Teams build interactive reports and dashboards from the data they already use, share them with the people who need them, and refresh them instead of rebuilding them each month. If your team mostly needs faster answers inside Excel, the Copilot in Excel day or Excel Pivot Tables may suit them better.
Questions buyers ask
Is the training live?
Yes. Every session is taught live by Ian Littlejohn, with questions answered as they come up. Nothing is pre-recorded.
Is this a public course or a private one?
A private course for your team only. You choose the dates, and the examples are pitched at the work your team does.
Can we book one day on its own?
Yes. Each day can be booked on its own. Day 2 follows on from Day 1, so it suits a team that can already build and publish a simple report in Power BI Desktop. Most teams new to Power BI book both.
What do delegates need?
Power BI Desktop on a Windows PC, and a Power BI Pro licence to publish and share in the Power BI Service. Day 2 spends the morning in the Service, so every delegate needs a Pro licence that day. We check your Power BI admin settings with you before the course.
Do we work on our own files during the course?
The course uses prepared sales data, so everyone can follow the same steps and see exactly what Power BI can do. The examples are chosen so the team can see what becomes possible with their own data. The idea is that they then start building with their own files after the course. If they need help after that, Ian can support them on a consulting basis, or set up a call on Teams or Zoom to answer their questions, charged for the time.
Does it cover Copilot in Power BI?
Day 2 closes with a first look at Copilot in Power BI. The two days are about building, sharing and calculating in Power BI yourselves, which is what makes Copilot useful later.
How many people can attend?
Up to 8 for a live online day and up to 10 face to face. Up to two more delegates can join at £95 each per day.
Can you run a half day?
Yes, if a half day suits your team better. Half days are priced when we quote.
