One-day course

Excel Power Pivot training

Your team rebuilds the same year-on-year and year-to-date reports by hand, and the numbers can shift depending on who builds them. Power Pivot connects your tables into one model with reusable calculations, so margin, growth and same-period-last-year stay consistent - built once, not rebuilt every month. Delivered live online to teams anywhere in the UK, or face to face at your offices.

  • Price: £995 + VAT live online, £1,395 + VAT face to face - for the whole team, not per person
  • Who it is for: Excel users in finance, operations, sales and HR who build regular reports and are comfortable with Pivot Tables
  • Taught by: Ian Littlejohn - 400,000+ learners taught on Udemy, 4.6 average rating from 140,000+ reviews

What your team will be able to do

  • Load four years of transactions into the data model and analyse far more data than a worksheet can hold.
  • Connect tables with relationships instead of chains of lookups.
  • Build reusable measures so profit, margin and growth mean the same thing in every report.
  • Write core DAX - sums, ratios, distinct counts, and CALCULATE with filters.
  • Add time intelligence - previous month, same period last year, year-to-date and quarter-to-date.
  • Organise a model properly with a date table, sets, KPIs and hierarchies.

The day at a glance

Six sessions, each with hands-on exercises.

  • What Power Pivot is. Loading and browsing data in the model, and first Pivot Tables from it.
  • Calculated columns. Sales, cost and profit, with field formats set correctly.
  • Dates done properly. A real date table, sort-by columns, and IF and SWITCH for business logic.
  • Measures. Measures against calculated columns - core DAX and CALCULATE with filters.
  • Time intelligence. Previous month, same period last year, year-to-date and quarter-to-date.
  • Relationships. Calculating across tables - then sets, KPIs and hierarchies.

What your team needs in place

  • Excel 2016 or later, or Microsoft 365, on Windows, with Power Pivot enabled - Power Pivot is not available in Excel for Mac
  • For live online days: a stable internet connection. A second screen helps but is not needed
  • Comfortable building a Pivot Table. No previous Power Pivot or DAX experience

The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples show what becomes possible with your own data, and the team starts using it on their own files after the session.

Where Power Pivot fits

Power Pivot is the step up from Pivot Tables, for teams whose reports draw on several tables or more data than a worksheet handles well. The data model and the DAX language are the same ones Power BI uses, so a team that learns Power Pivot is well placed to move into Power BI later. If the team has not built Pivot Tables before, start with the Excel Pivot Tables day.

Questions buyers ask

Is the training live?

Yes. Every session is taught live by Ian Littlejohn, with questions answered as they come up. Nothing is pre-recorded.

Which platform do you use for live online training?

Microsoft Teams or Zoom, whichever your organisation prefers. A second screen helps but is not needed - delegates can switch between the session and Excel.

Is this a public course or a private one?

A private day for your team only. You choose the date, and the examples are pitched at the work your team does.

Do we work on our own files during the day?

The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples are chosen so the team can see what becomes possible with their own data. The idea is that they then start using it on their own files after the session. If they need help after that, Ian can support them on a consulting basis, or set up a call on Teams or Zoom to answer their questions, charged for the time.

Does my team need Pivot Table experience first?

Yes, it helps. Delegates should be comfortable building a Pivot Table, because the day builds Pivot Tables from the data model. If they are not, the Excel Pivot Tables day is the place to start, and the two can run as a two-day programme.

Is this the same as Power BI?

Not quite. Power Pivot stays inside Excel, but it uses the same data model and the same DAX language as Power BI. What your team learns here carries straight across if you move to Power BI later.

How many people can attend?

Up to 8 for a live online day and up to 10 face to face. Up to two more delegates can join at £95 each per day.

Can you run a half day?

Yes, if a half day suits your team better. Half days are priced when we quote.
