Excel Power Query training
Every month the same export, the same fixes, the same hour lost before the analysis can even start. Power Query records the clean-up once and replays it on every refresh. This one-day live course teaches your team to build those repeatable steps inside Excel - importing, reshaping, combining and cleaning data - with no code required. Delivered live online to teams anywhere in the UK, or face to face at your offices.

What your team will be able to do
- Import data into the Power Query Editor, shape it, and refresh the whole process in one click.
- Fix rows, headings, data types and text once - and never repeat the fix again.
- Add custom, date and conditional columns to enrich the data for analysis.
- Combine sources - merge in lookup data and append month after month of exports.
- Summarise with Group By, and clean a genuinely messy dataset end to end.
- Connect to databases, CSV, web pages and JSON, and read the M code behind every click.
The day at a glance
Six sessions, each with hands-on exercises.
- Getting started. What Power Query is, a first import, and a tour of the Editor.
- Basic transformations. Shaping rows, data types, renames and replace values.
- Custom, date and conditional columns. Then Close & Load, and where a query lands.
- Advanced transformations. Merging lookup data, appending sales files, calculations and Group By.
- Cleansing messy data. Profile it, repair it, and prove the clean.
- Connecting to other data sources. And the M language behind the clicks - then plan where the team will use it.
What your team needs in place
- Excel 2016 or later, or Microsoft 365 - Power Query is built in
- For live online days: a stable internet connection. A second screen helps but is not needed
- Confident with everyday Excel. No coding experience and no previous Power Query experience
The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples show what becomes possible with your own data, and the team starts using it on their own files after the session.

Where Power Query fits
Power Query is the step before the analysis. It turns the export your team receives into a clean table, the same way every time, so Pivot Tables, Power Pivot and Copilot in Excel all start from good data. Copilot in Excel works best on data that is already in good shape, which is why the Power Query day is the companion to the Copilot in Excel day. Together they make a two-day programme.
About the Copilot in Excel day
Questions buyers ask
Is the training live?
Yes. Every session is taught live by Ian Littlejohn, with questions answered as they come up. Nothing is pre-recorded.
Which platform do you use for live online training?
Microsoft Teams or Zoom, whichever your organisation prefers. A second screen helps but is not needed - delegates can switch between the session and Excel.
Is this a public course or a private one?
A private day for your team only. You choose the date, and the examples are pitched at the work your team does.
Do we work on our own files during the day?
The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples are chosen so the team can see what becomes possible with their own data. The idea is that they then start using it on their own files after the session. If they need help after that, Ian can support them on a consulting basis, or set up a call on Teams or Zoom to answer their questions, charged for the time.
Is there any coding?
No. Everything is done with the Power Query menus. The last session shows the M code that Power Query writes behind each click, so delegates can read it, but nobody has to write it.
Is Power Query the same as Copilot in Excel?
No. Power Query records a clean-up that runs the same way on every refresh. Copilot in Excel answers questions about data that is already in good shape. The two can run as a two-day programme.
How many people can attend?
Up to 8 for a live online day and up to 10 face to face. Up to two more delegates can join at £95 each per day.
Can you run a half day?
Yes, if a half day suits your team better. Half days are priced when we quote.
