One-day course

Excel Pivot Tables training

Which region sells the most? Which products carry their category? Are sales actually growing? Your team can answer questions like these in minutes with a Pivot Table - no formulas required - yet most people still build the same reports by hand every month. This one-day live course starts from nothing and ends with an interactive dashboard. Delivered live online to teams anywhere in the UK, or face to face at your offices.

What your team will be able to do

  • Structure data so a Pivot Table grows with it, and build a first report in minutes.
  • Summarise any measure - totals, averages, counts, highest and lowest - side by side in one table.
  • Group dates into years, quarters and months, and chart the trend year against year.
  • Narrow the answer with filters, Top 10, slicers and timelines - and drive several tables from one slicer.
  • Show shares, running totals, differences and rankings without writing a single formula.
  • Build an interactive one-page dashboard with key metrics, charts and connected slicers.

The day at a glance

Six sessions, each with hands-on exercises.

  • Getting started. What a Pivot Table is for, and structuring data so it works first time.
  • Your first Pivot Table. The four areas, multiple dimensions and measures, sorting and refresh.
  • Aggregation, grouping and formatting. Then dates and trend analysis.
  • Filtering. Top 10, slicers and timelines - one slicer driving several Pivot Tables.
  • Analysing data. Percentage shares, running totals, differences and rank, plus frequency analysis.
  • The dashboard build. Conditional formatting and an interactive dashboard - then a capstone brief on a new dataset.

What your team needs in place

  • Excel 2016 or later, or Microsoft 365
  • For live online days: a stable internet connection. A second screen helps but is not needed
  • Confident with everyday Excel. No previous Pivot Table experience

The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples show what becomes possible with your own data, and the team starts using it on their own files after the session.

Where Pivot Tables fit

Pivot Tables are the natural place to start. They turn a list of transactions into answers in a few clicks, and they sit behind a lot of what the other courses build on. Copilot in Excel can create Pivot Tables by prompt, and people who understand them get far more from it. If the data arrives messy every month, the Excel Power Query day fixes that first. If the team outgrows a single table, Excel Power Pivot connects several tables into one model.

Questions buyers ask

Is the training live?

Yes. Every session is taught live by Ian Littlejohn, with questions answered as they come up. Nothing is pre-recorded.

Which platform do you use for live online training?

Microsoft Teams or Zoom, whichever your organisation prefers. A second screen helps but is not needed - delegates can switch between the session and Excel.

Is this a public course or a private one?

A private day for your team only. You choose the date, and the examples are pitched at the work your team does.

Do we work on our own files during the day?

The day uses prepared training data, so everyone can follow the same steps. The examples are chosen so the team can see what becomes possible with their own data. The idea is that they then start using it on their own files after the session. If they need help after that, Ian can support them on a consulting basis, or set up a call on Teams or Zoom to answer their questions, charged for the time.

Does my team need any Pivot Table experience?

No. The day starts from nothing. Delegates should be confident with everyday Excel - entering data, simple formulas and saving workbooks - but they do not need to have built a Pivot Table before.

Does it cover Copilot in Excel?

No. This day teaches Pivot Tables by hand, so your team understands what they are building. Copilot in Excel can build Pivot Tables by prompt, and the Copilot in Excel day covers that. The two can run as a two-day programme.

How many people can attend?

Up to 8 for a live online day and up to 10 face to face. Up to two more delegates can join at £95 each per day.

Can you run a half day?

Yes, if a half day suits your team better. Half days are priced when we quote.
